Book 1 - I Would Die For You

by Dee Price

Voyager sat in the middle of what could easily be termed a 'highly critical' situation. The ship sat quietly in an area of space, but was completely surrounded by alien ships. Inadvertently Voyager had sailed into a space these aliens, called the Keshen, considered forbidden space for all but their own race, and nothing Captain Janeway could do or say appeased Magistrate Asim. In fact he was unbending on what was termed a 'solution.'

The solution? Simple as far as Asim was concerned. Give them a prisoner to 'sacrifice' to appease the Gods for the visitor's transgression, and they would then be free to go. Janeway refused the demand, of course, and was actually aghast that they would request such a thing.

All the Senior Officers were gathered in the Conference Room and had been discussing possible solutions for the last hour without success. Janeway had hailed the Magistrate asking if he would please accept some other solution, as giving up one of their crewmembers to be killed was unthinkable, but he was adamant a sacrifice was required and that until such a compliance was met, Voyager would not be allowed to move.

"Maybe we can shoot our way out. Disable a couple of their ships to form an opening and then jump to Warp," suggested Tom Paris. "Our sensors show their speed does not match ours."

"You are forgetting one thing, Mr. Paris," said Tuvok. "Our sensors do indicate their firepower is considerably more powerful than ours, and with eight ships surrounding us we would barely open fire before we would be destroyed."

"That's typical, Tuvok. You always look on the bright side," grumbled Tom.

"I am merely stating a fact, Mr. Paris," said Tuvok.

"All right now, let's not get into arguments," interceded Janeway. "That won't solve our problem. I want you all to think on this tonight. It appears that they will not fire at us as long as we do not make any kind of move, so I think we are safe for the night. However, I want Security and sensors on full alert and shields at full in the event they try to board us to obtain their hostage. Dismissed."

As everyone walked out, Kathryn turned to stare out at the nearest ship, which sat facing Voyager. She imagined their weapons were armed and ready to fire. Thus occupied she failed to notice that Chakotay did not leave. Turning with a sigh, she was startled to see him standing in the middle of the room.

"Chakotay! I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were still here. What is it? You obviously look as if you have something to say."

"I do Kathryn," he said softly. "I believe I have the solution."

"You do?" she asked excitedly. "What is it and why didn't you speak up at the meeting?"

"For the simple reason I do not believe you will accept my solution."

Kathryn frowned. "And what is it?"

"Very simple. I offer myself as their sacrifice and then you, the crew and Voyager can leave and be safe."

"NO! I refuse to accept that, Chakotay. You know better than to say something like that."

"It's the only way Kathryn. We can't outshoot them as Tuvok so brilliantly pointed out."

"I said no, Chakotay. That solution is out of the question!"

"Kathryn, listen to me. They have stated one person as a sacrifice. One! Not ten or twenty or even the whole ship. Just one person!"

"I don't care Chakotay. I wont let you even suggest that solution!"

He walked over to her and took hold of both her shoulders. "Kathryn, it's the only way. I'm willing to be that person if it means you will be safe. I would die for you, Kathryn, surely you know that!" His voice and eyes held an intensity that Kathryn had not seen for some time.

The storm clouds in her eyes dissipated and her expression softened. "I know you would, Chakotay," she said softly. "But I won't let you do it. I refuse to lose you."

Chakotay started to open his mouth to protest, but Kathryn quickly put one finger on his lips. "And don't try to spout 'the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few' Vulcan logic."

He smiled. "I was just about to say that. And that philosophy is correct in this instance."

"No, and that's final. We will not sacrifice you or any member of this crew to escape this situation. I will make it an order if I have to Chakotay, that you will not put yourself in danger. Am I clear?"

Chakotay stared hard at her for a long moment. At last he nodded his head but said quietly, "It's the only solution, Kathryn, and you know I'm right." He then turned and walked out of the room, leaving the Captain just staring at the door.

The next morning everyone was at his or her regular station on the Bridge. Kathryn had called a meeting for 0900 hours and there was still twenty minutes before that time.

B'Elanna's voice was heard on the Comm line. "Chakotay can you come to Engineering for a moment? I need a second opinion on something."

Chakotay stood and answered, "On my way," nodded to Kathryn as he smiled and said, "Don't start the meeting without me."

Kathryn laughed at that and reminded him to not to take too long.

At 0900 hours the officers started to arrive at the Conference Room. At last everyone appeared to be there and just as the Captain started to ask if they had thought of any possible solutions, she noted that Chakotay was not present, although B'Elanna was.

"Did Chakotay meet you in Engineering, B'Elanna?"

She frowned. "No. Was he supposed to?"

"You hailed him twenty minutes ago and asked him to come to Engineering to confer on a problem."

"He told me at breakfast to do that as he wanted an excuse to be off the Bridge for a few minutes. I thought he was going to play a joke on somebody," said B'Elanna in a frustrated voice.

Kathryn immediately slapped her Comm badge. "Commander Chakotay, report to the Conference Room immediately."

There wasn't any answer, so she asked the computer to locate him.

"Commander Chakotay is in the Shuttle Bay," came the metallic response.

"Chakotay! What are you doing in the Shuttle Bay?" Kathryn called out.

At that moment the excited voice of Lt Ayala on the bridge was heard.

"Captain. Commander Chakotay has just initiated the transporter on the Delta Flyer!"

"Stop him!" yelled the Captain.

"I can't. He's gone," came the soft reply.

"What was his destination?" asked the Captain quickly as she rose to her feet.

There was quiet for a moment, and then the somber voice of Ayala said, "One of the alien ships, Captain."

"Hail them!" she yelled as she turned and ran out of the room and headed for the bridge.

B'Elanna sat stunned. Chakotay had duped her – had used her. "What the hell is he up to?" she muttered as she finally rose and headed onto the Bridge.

As Janeway raced onto the Bridge she immediately looked over at Lt. Ayala. "They are hailing us, Captain," he said.

"On screen," said Kathryn in a hard voice.

"Ah Captain Janeway," said the alien Captain. " I am Captain Rashez. I see you have decided on which crewmember to sacrifice. A fine specimen he is, as well as an Officer!"

"Send him back!" she snarled. "We didn't authorize his departure!"

"Really? He seemed to be willing when he contacted me a few minutes ago."

"He is doing this on his own and against orders. Please return him immediately!"

"I think not Captain, but I will let you speak to him." Turning he nodded to someone off screen and Chakotay was roughly pulled into view.

"Chakotay what the hell do you think you are doing?" she said in a very angry tone while also raising her voice several decibels.

"Hello Kathryn. Please don't be angry. You know this is the only way."

"Like hell it is! I told you last night I wouldn't accept your solution!"

"Kathryn, this will save you and the crew. I am willing to die for you . . . I would die a thousand times for you if it meant your safety. They have promised that the minute I am . . . gone, that Voyager is free to leave. Get your ship home Kathryn, promise me you will get them home!"

"You had no right . . ."

"I have every right. It is my life and if it means your safety and the crew's then I am willingly doing this. You know in your heart I am right."

Everyone on the Bridge sat or stood in stunned silence at what had happened. Harry's eyes were wide in disbelief and Tom looked angry. Tuvok, of course, stood quietly at his post, his face as impassive as ever.

Kathryn's eyes shimmered with tears to the point Chakotay's face was just a blur. "I want you back here, Chakotay," she said softly. "I order you to renege your bargain and get back here. We will work something out."

Chakotay just smiled. "You know I wont do that. Just get your crew home Kathryn, and if you can, when you meet with Starfleet," and he hesitated and then grinned widely, "Tell them I wasn't such a bad guy after all."

"How can you joke . . . ?"

"What the hell do you think you are doing Chakotay?" yelled B'Elanna as she stormed in front of Janeway. "You used me so you could kill yourself!"

"I'm sorry for that B'Elanna. It was the only way I could get off the Bridge. Please forgive me?"

B'Elanna's face was a storm cloud and her fists were clenched in anger, but before she could respond the Alien Captain pushed Chakotay to one side.

"Enough!" roared the alien Captain. "Prepare to send the prisoner to the planet," he ordered and Chakotay was roughly hauled away. Kathryn noted his hands were tied behind his back as he was pulled from the room.

The alien Captain looked back at Janeway and smiled. "The sacrifice will commence the minute he is on the planet and after you have watched you are free . . ."

"Watch it?" said a thunderstruck Janeway. "I will no such a thing, you coward!" snarled Kathryn. "We will not watch you murder one of my Officers!"

"Ah but you will, Captain Janeway," came the voice of Magistrate Asim as the picture changed to his position on the planet. "It is one of the rules of the sacrifice, that the transgressors watch, thus hopefully imprinting the seriousness of this mistake on your minds. And you will not be able to turn away or close your eyes. You see," and he smiled, "We have methods of preventing that," and he nodded to someone off screen.

"How can you possibly do such a thing?" she whispered, as complete shock at what had happened was now making her mind almost numb. "You could put a warning buoy up for outsiders. We are new in this space and did not know about your forbidden space."

"It is our rules and our way, Captain. The sacrifice will commence in two minutes," and the scene switched instantly to a picture of Chakotay, standing naked and with both wrists and ankles chained to a wall. A guard stood on each side of him

"I'm sorry you have to see this Kathryn," he whispered. "I didn't know they would force you to watch."

Kathryn stood staring at him, unable to find words to say, but her heart breaking. Everyone else on the Bridge stood or sat in a mind-numbing trance as they stared at the screen, unable, as the Magistrate had said to turn their heads.

Suddenly one of the guards standing beside him drew his knife and whirling to face Chakotay, drove his knife into his left shoulder, just below the clavicle bone. Even before Chakotay's scream reached full volume another guard repeated the action to the other shoulder. Chakotay then flung his head back against the wall and gritted his teeth as the first guard now slashed across his chest from left shoulder to almost the right hip, and the other guard making his slash from right to left followed this. Chakotay now had a very large 'X' on his chest. Blood streamed down his body, from the chest and both shoulder wounds, making his body a hideous mottled red and white color

A guard appeared from off screen holding a torch, and approached Chakotay.

Kathryn groaned and said, "Oh God no."

The guard took the fire down each slash on Chakotay's chest and into each shoulder wound, which virtually cauterized the wounds and stopped the bleeding, but Chakotay's scream was a nightmare and shattered everyone on the Bridge.

Every member of the Bridge crew was deathly silent, all eyes filled with horror and all faces looking, yet not wanting to look, at the screen. Their eyes were drawn, mesmerized it seemed, to the screen, with all of their expressions almost trancelike as they stared. Kathryn managed to look over and saw Lt. Ayala, both fists clenching and unclenching. Next she quickly looked back at Tuvok and although not seeing any emotion, his jaw muscles were working furiously. Her eyes caught B'Elanna standing near Tuvok's station, her eyes in total shock and tears streaming down her cheeks while holding desperately to Tuvok's console so she would stay on her feet. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Tom swipe at his eyes and swallow continuously. She new without looking back that Harry would also be crying, or at least wide-eyed in shock at the horror they were all witnessing.

"You must watch the prisoner Captain," bellowed the Magistrate's voice.

She turned back to see Chakotay's head hanging down onto his chest. A table was wheeled in, full of instruments, and Kathryn shut her eyes, anticipating what would happen with them.

Again the voice, "You must watch, Captain!" was yelled out, and despite her efforts to keep her eyes closed she found herself unable to do so and so she attempted to focus on a spot just above Chakotay's head, but the Magistrate caught this and reprimanded her, again reminding her of the necessity to watch.

Chakotay had several fingernails pulled off his right hand and his scream was horrendous. It seemed to echo like a beating drum in an empty room and then reverberate throughout the Bridge. Two more fingernails were ripped off his left hand and even as Chakotay was screaming his head dropped down and vomit spewed onto his chest. It slowly slid down, with some being caught in his genitals, while the rest oozed on down his legs to plop into the growing pool of blood as his feet.

Kathryn heard retching on the Bridge and forcing her head to turn, saw Ensign Wright on her hands and knees with a pool of vomit on the deck. She heard gagging from another direction and then heard Harry mutter "Oh God," and then a vomit sound. She tasted acid in her own mouth and kept continuously swallowing to keep from throwing up herself.

More screams emanated from Chakotay and looking back she saw they had now pulled two toenails off of one foot. As Chakotay's screams continued Kathryn felt like all her hair was standing on end.

Next a vice was placed on both his scrotum and penis and tightened until Chakotay passed out. He was revived immediately, but by now did not have the strength to scream anymore and the sound that came out of his mouth was almost a muted, but continuous guttural groan.

Kathryn heard several different thumps to one side and chanced a quick look, noting Ensign Steward on the deck, apparently having passed out. That quick look also revealed Lt. Ayala on his knees pounding both fists onto the deck.

Sharp needles were then shoved into the tips of Chakotay's fingers and then two men stepped into view with leather whips and started beating Chakotay. With each snap of the leather on skin, fresh blood burst forth. The men were not indiscriminate where they struck and from his face down past his knees they hit, again and again until his body looked like an old Earth 20th century raw hamburger. Someone later said they counted 50 lashes from one man so with two men doing this it stood to reason Chakotay had received 100 lashes across the front of his body. As he hung limp in the chains, obviously unconscious, Kathryn's stomach began to roil, and she wasn't alone. She again heard retching on the left side of the Bridge.

Several screams brought her alert and she was horrified to see a long line of about twenty aliens, some with swords, some with knives, some with plain clubs, while other clubs had attached thorns of some sort, start running past Chakotay, each taking a swing at him with their particular instrument. They turned and ran back, repeating the procedure, and then did a short dance for the viewers and ran out of the room, still whooping and hollering.

Kathryn no longer saw Chakotay standing there. He was unrecognizable now and she found herself asking what else they could do. She found out.

Scalding hot water was thrown on his body, followed by a pot of hot oil. Chakotay did not scream anymore or even make any kind of sound although his body reacted with extreme shuddering and jerking. Thankfully his mind was now beyond feeling the pain, and he just hung limply, being held in a somewhat upright position by the chains on his wrists.

Another alien stepped into view and drove a knife into Chakotay's chest and then moved away. From Kathryn's viewpoint it was as close to the heart, without hitting the heart as it could be. Another man appeared from the side and pointed a weapon at Chakotay.

Harry gasped. "Oh my God, Captain. I hope that's not a Disruptor!"

The man fired, hitting Chakotay in the right rib cage and leaving a large burn area. Smoke curled from his skin and Kathryn could swear she could smell the burning skin.

At this point a white-smocked man stepped forward and examined Chakotay and then with a satisfied smile, nodded to the Magistrate.

"It is done," he said simply.

Magistrate Asim stood in front of the camera and smiled. "Your man suffered well, Captain. You should be proud of him. He lasted longer than anyone has before. As soon as we cremate him you will be free to leave."

"Captain, four of the alien ships are turning away," said Tuvok quietly, "But three still remain."

Kathryn briefly looked back him, her mind racing for some solution to retrieve the body of Chakotay.

"No!" she suddenly yelled as she faced forward again. "Please. It is our custom to care for our dead. Please let me have the body. We must have Commander Chakotay's remains!"

"That is not allowed, Captain. Besides, you might try some trickery."

"I assure we wont. But if that is your concern, let me send our doctor then. He is an EMH."

"An EMH?" he said with a frown.

"He is a hologram and can do you no harm."

"I see." The Magistrate thought a moment and then nodded his head. "I will allow your doctor to see the body, if only to verify to you he is dead, as we must maintain possession. But it must be done immediately."

Janeway instantly tapped her Comm badge, but before she could say anything the doctor replied, "I will beam immediately to the Bridge, Captain I have witnessed this barbaric act as apparently these monsters have beamed this to all parts of the . . . ship," he finished as he materialized beside Kathryn.

"Tuvok, beam the doctor to Chakotay as soon as you are given the coordinates," she said as she deliberately turned her back to the screen and nodded discretely to Tuvok.

"Not so fast Captain," warned the Magistrate. He must not wear a communicator. We are aware you use those to track your personnel."

"All right," she replied as she faced forward again after a long, hard stare at Tuvok. "But he must have his Mobile Emitter as without that he is nothing." replied Janeway quietly. "You have your Mobile Emitter don't you doctor?" she said as she stared hard at him.

"Of course Captain. You know I can't go anywhere without it," he said with a frown as he stared back at the Captain.

"Then examine the Commander with your Medical Tri-Corder when you are with him and let us know the condition."

"Very well," said the Magistrate, drawing Kathryn's eyes back to the screen. "The coordinates have been sent to your ship."

"I have them Captain," said Tuvok. "How much time do we get to examine the body, sir?"

"You will be allowed two minutes," replied the Magistrate.

"We won't need that much time will we Doctor?" said Janeway pointedly.

The doctor suddenly smiled. "Only about a minute Captain, for a man of my expertise."

"Then good luck doctor. Do your thing. Energize," and the doctor disappeared, to appear almost instantly in some room. A cot with the body of Chakotay stretched out appeared in the background. Again two guards were present at the head and foot of the bed.

The doctor quickly walked to the cot and opened his Medical Tri-Corder.

"Well the readings say this is Commander Chakotay, Captain, but you couldn't prove it to look at him."

"It is him though doctor?"

"Captain the remaining alien ships are leaving," reported Harry in a whisper, still too numb about what he had witnessed to realize he was interrupting the Captain.

The doctor took one more look at Chakotay as he moved right up beside him, and bending over for a closer look, said, "Oh it is definitely the Commander, Captain. The TriCorder shows a match and I think time is short so now would be perfect!"

Suddenly both the doctor and Chakotay twinkled out of sight.

"I have beamed them directly to Sick Bay, Captain," said Tuvok.

"Warp 9 Tom! Get us out of here!" yelled Kathryn as she started running for the doors. "Tuvok you have the Bridge and Tom, don't lower the speed until you hear it from me!"

"Yes maam!" said Tom as his fingers flew over his panel and Voyager shot out of sight.

Kathryn raced into Sickbay. The doctor was bending over Chakotay. As she ran up and saw Chakotay in person her hand flew to her mouth and she involuntarily gagged. He looked much worse in person than on the screen. She gagged again and then swallowed hard several times to alleviate the acid reflux she now tasted. Then, willing herself not to vomit stood straight and looked at the Doctor.

"Doctor?" she asked in an almost inaudible and yet decidedly shocked voice.

"I caught the faintest of a heartbeat down on the planet Captain, but not now. The Commander is so near death he might as well be!"

"Save him, doctor, if it is at all possible," she ordered.

"Captain, his condition . . . he is dead now and I can't resurrect the dead! He just isn't going to make it and if by some miracle I do bring him back, he might be a vegetable mentally."

Kathryn leaned over Chakotay and put her mouth to his ear. "Chakotay, this is Kathryn. I don't know whether you can hear me but I love you Chakotay. I love you very, very much, and I refuse to lose you in this way. I make this vow to you, that if you survive, I will marry you. Do you hear me Chakotay? I will marry you, but you must survive if you want me as your wife. It's your choice, my love."

She straightened and looked at the doctor. "Do all that you can Doctor. Every morning and night I want you to report his condition to me. And anytime else if anything unexpected happens," and she turned and strode briskly out of Sick Bay, her shoulders pulled back and her head held high, but with her eyes still seeing that horrific mass of blood, bone, raw muscle and blackened skin that used to be her First Officer.

The doctor frowned and harrumphed. "If she thinks telling the Commander she loves him and will marry him if he lives is going to work, then I'm not a doctor." However as he looked down at Chakotay his eyes widened, as in the corner where Chakotay's eyes should be, he thought he saw a glistening and wondered if it was a small tear. His Tri-Corder once again registered an extremely faint heartbeat, although all monitors on the bio-bed were at zero.

Kathryn strode back onto the Bridge and everyone seemed to turn as one and look at her.

She stopped still and looked around at each face, each showing fear, shock and horror, with some looking as if they were still in a trance. It was quite obvious they were all experiencing a mental trauma.

"The doctor caught the barest of heartbeats on the planet and will now see if he can save him," she said quietly.

"It does not seem possible he will survive, Captain," said Tuvok.

"How could anyone survive what they did to him," said Harry in a statement, not a question.

"How did you get your message to Tuvok and the doctor on what you wanted to do, Captain?" asked Tom softly.

"I just willed them to understand we were not going to leave without Chakotay's body. Plus the fact maybe they know that is my way, to not leave anyone. I'm not sure, but they did and we do have the Commander."

"I felt it was your intention to somehow retrieve the Commander, Captain and when you said you wanted the body because of our ways, you seemed to enunciate certain words, such as 'want the body'."

"I'm just glad you caught it Tuvok." Turning to Harry she asked if there were any pursuers.

"None Captain. We caught them completely by surprise and they couldn't match our speed."

"Good. Tom, drop to Warp 3. I still want to put a lot of distance between us and that planet." As Tom slowed Voyager, Kathryn started to move to her command chair but caught sight of B'Elanna. She was still standing, immobile, in the same position as before.

Walking over to her she said, "B'Elanna, it wasn't your fault."

B'Elanna just stared, her eyes seeing nothing and vacant of all emotion. Kathryn realized she was in shock and placing an arm around her shoulders she started to gently move her towards her Ready Room. Once inside she retrieved a Med Kit and administered a sedative.

"It wasn't your fault B'Elanna," she said again said and suddenly B'Elanna's eyes shifted to look at Janeway.

"Oh my God, I killed him, Captain!" she suddenly said. "I killed Chakotay, I killed my best friend," and she broke into a convulsive sobbing. Kathryn immediately pulled her into her arms and B'Elanna held on tight.

"No you didn't B'Elanna. We have Chakotay now in Sick Bay and the doctor is trying to work his own brand of miracle. Chakotay used you, yes, to get off the bridge and carry out his plan, but anyone would have done the same thing on that kind of request. Now I want you to go to your quarters and rest. I have given you a combination sedative and a slight medication to alleviate the shock your system is in. It's only mild but you will sleep for several hours. I'll check on you later."

B'Elanna pulled back and wiped at her eyes. "Words, Captain. I know you mean well, but I will never forgive myself."

"Nor will I. Chakotay told me of his plan last night, but I ordered him to forget it. I should have known, knowing him, that he might try something. If anyone is to blame, it is I. Now go to your quarters."

B'Elanna nodded and walked out, followed by Kathryn, who stopped at the stairs and watched as she somberly and slowly walked off the Bridge. Janeway then turned and headed for her command chair and after sitting, pulled up her console, but her mind was in Sick Bay and she couldn't help but see the empty Commander's chair beside hers.

* * * *

A short time later the Doctor hailed Janeway. "Captain, this is Sick Bay. May I speak to your privately for a moment?"

As Kathryn stood the Bridge became deathly silent. "I'll take it in my Ready Room, Doctor, if that is all right."

"That would be suitable Captain."

As Kathryn walked toward her room she could feel the eyes of everyone on the Bridge following her and it made goose pimples stand out on her arms. "Patch the call to my Ready Room, Tuvok," she said as she walked by him. Tuvok merely nodded.

"All right Doctor, what is it?" she asked, her heart beating like a jackhammer, as she feared what his message might be.

"It's about the Commander, Captain. I have made a complete examination of him and the injuries are so numerous and severe that . . ." He stopped and looked at her, as if expecting her to finish the sentence for him.

"What have you found, Doctor?"

He sighed and glanced down at his Padd. "Well internally he has gall bladder, kidney and liver lacerations as well as severe bruising, with the liver badly torn in one area. The three knife wounds did not hit any major organ nor even an artery or main vein believe it or not, which leads me to believe they knew exactly where to strike without killing him instantly, but still those wounds did a lot of damage and tore up the muscles and ligaments in those areas. Almost all of his ribs are broken, with two puncturing his lungs, both of his arms and legs have several broken bones, he has a fractured skull as well as a severe concussion, and I'm not sure I can save his eyesight. The Phaser wound has virtually left a hole in his side. The finger and toenails will eventually grow back but will be very painful in the meantime.

"As for the genitalia . . . Captain he is a young man and undoubtedly could marry and have children, but . . . well, I don't think that's possible now, they are damaged so severely." He briefly looked up, but when the Captain just seemed to stare into the monitor and didn't speak, he cleared his throat and continued.

"He is also bleeding internally, as well as externally of course, as undoubtedly many veins and capillaries were ruptured. His stomach has a slight tear and the acid from that is leaking into his system and that must be repaired immediately, as well as everything else," he added with a sigh. "His bowels have shut down and I am going to have to arrange for a colostomy, but that may be temporary, only time will tell on that. As to inserting a Catheter into his penis to take care of the urinary flow . . . I don't know whether that is possible because of such severe damage to that organ. As a matter of fact I'm not sure I can find the Urethra to . . . oh, I'm sorry Captain, that's probably more information than you wanted to know."

Janeway, who was rubbing her forehead, waved her hand. "That's all right doctor, continue."

"All right. His neck and Larynx are also badly injured. As to his mental functions, his brain specifically . . . well, as I said he has a severe concussion, but I feel there is a possibility of brain damage."

As the doctor listed all these problems Kathryn's stomach roiled and her heart felt like it would break.

"Is that it Doctor?" she asked quietly.

"That is just internally, Captain. Externally his entire front of his body is raw, virtually burned down to the last layer of skin and thus exposing the nerve endings from the scalding water and oil. That alone is going to take extensive Dermal Regeneration. As you might expect he has massive bruises and cuts due to the whipping, not to mention the likelihood of massive infection. At the moment I have him deeply sedated, essentially in an administered coma, although his system has virtually shut down, putting himself into a coma without my assistance."

He looked silently at the Captain a moment. Then softly said, "Captain, under the circumstances, after what the Commander went through, don't you think . . . wouldn't it be more humane to just let him pass on?"

"After what he went through to save us Doctor, he also has the right to live – to see the fruits of his sacrifice."

"But he's not even a human being right now in his condition, Captain. He wouldn't want to function as half a person. Look Captain, I heard what you said to him on Sick Bay, and maybe that's the reason he is still hanging on, but there is only a very faint heartbeat and his brain wave is almost flat, and you know that is the definition of death."

Kathryn stared at him, knowing some of what the doctor said was true. She sighed and then said, "What have you done medically?"

"I have given him some intravenous fluids as well as anti-inflammatory injections and have him deeply sedated. After that I made my scan to determine his condition."

"What treatment do you plan?"

"The first thing I would have to do is take care of all the internal damage, which requires surgery . . . several surgeries as a matter of fact."

"All right, do it Doctor. I think he deserves the chance after what he did, and knowing the Commander, he will make the decision for himself whether to live or die, but I've never known him to give up have you?"

"Not give up, certainly not Captain. He bends and compromises but he doesn't quit."

"Then do everything you can and we'll see how it goes."

"In that case I have a request, Captain. Commander Chakotay has lost a lot of blood and I believe he needs a transfusion of whole blood. I have checked the crew's database and found only five people who have enough of the qualities, but only one of them is a close match. I found it hard to believe there is not an identical match in 141 people!"

"Who are the five, Doctor?" asked Janeway as she wiped at one eye that kept misting over.

"There is Taylor in Engineering, Rodriquez in Maintenance, Rogers in Security and strangely enough, Mr. Paris. The fifth one is you, Captain, and you are actually the closest match. It's almost as if you are soul mates in some way to have such a close match and yet not be identical."

Kathryn's heart leaped at the word soul mates. Chakotay's friend, White Rain, had told her years ago of the tribal belief in soul mates, and Chakotay himself had often talked of this belief, that in his tribe it was believed you found your soul mate at some point in life.

"I'm on my way, Doctor, and I'll bring Tom with me."

"Very well, Captain. I will notify the others to report in one hour then."

Janeway broke the communication and strode quickly out onto the Bridge. "Tom come with me," and without further explanation she turned for the doors.

Tom's heart lurched as his first thought was that he and the Captain had to identify Chakotay's remains. He swallowed, stood and nodded as he moved to join her, saying a quiet "Yes maam," as he moved, albeit reluctantly.

The Captain was quiet the entire way to Sick Bay so Tom didn't even think of initiating a conversation. As the doors swished open Tom was quick to note there was a white curtain all the way around one bed, and surmised that is where Chakotay lay. He took a deep breath and then gagged at the smell.

"I have notified the others to report in one hour, Captain, and they were all quite agreeable."

"Good. Then I will go first," she responded and headed toward the curtain.

"If you will lay on this bed, Captain," said the doctor as he hurried ahead of her and indicated the empty bed beside the curtain. "I have isolated the Commander to prevent any further contamination.

"What are we doing, Captain?" asked Tom, confusion on why he was now there raging in his mind.

"Oh! I'm sorry Tom," said Janeway. "You do need to know. We are transfusing some of our blood into Chakotay. There were only five of us that matched . . . somewhat matched that is," she said as she lay down.

Tom felt a wave of relief. "Glad to help all I can, Captain. He's still alive then?"

"If you call it that, Mr Paris," said the Doctor as he hooked up the Captain and inserted the needle. Blood immediately started flowing through the tube and into a bag. From there it seemed to go through another machine before flowing out into a tube that went into a slit in the curtain.

"I am basically sterilizing the blood before sending it on to the Commander," explained the Doctor as he examined the readings on the machine. "I had a devil of a time finding a vein in his arms. Thank goodness he is heavily sedated what with all the probing I had to do. I'm sure it wouldn't have been pleasant for him otherwise." Tom winced at that statement, as a picture formed in his mind of the doctor jabbing into a raw arm trying to find a blood vessel.

Ten minutes later Kathryn sat up and the Doctor helped her to the next bed and then motioned to Tom to take her place as he changed the needle and the tubing. Tom closed his eyes as the Doctor was finally ready and the needle was inserted into his arm. Just as quickly he opened them. What a wimp I am to fear a needle after what Chakotay went through for us!

Ten minutes later the Doctor announced the transfusion was complete and told Tom to lay still.

Tom turned to Janeway. "Captain?"

"Yes Tom?"

"Will Chakotay make it?"

Tom could hear the Captain sigh, an almost hopeless sigh. "We don't know Tom. Basically, even with the Doctor's help, it's going to rest with him, whether he wants to live or not. But in the meantime I have ordered the Doctor to do what he can, first to make him comfortable and without pain and then, as long as he is alive, to start treating him. The first thing he required was this whole blood transfusion."

"Have you seen him?"

Kathryn closed her eyes and was silent a moment. "Yes, I have seen him" she whispered, "And I wouldn't wish that on anyone. That is why we have a curtain up."

Tom's stomach heaved as he looked up at the ceiling. If the Captain could barely stand to see Chakotay then he was bad beyond imagination.

"I hope he makes it Captain, so I and all the crew can thank him for what he did for us," said Tom softly.

"We'll see Tom. We'll see," came Janeway's whispered response.

After about fifteen minutes the Doctor cleared them to report back to the Bridge. It was still ten minutes before the next crewmember reported and he had to make sure the Commander didn't go into shock from the Captain and Tom's blood, or worse, not need the other three at all.

After a short time, it seemed the transfusions were working satisfactorily so the doctor readied the supplies and when Rodriquez showed up, he continued with the transfusions. Taylor and Rogers followed, and again Chakotay's body appeared to accept the 'alien' blood into his system. Following that he again made an exam of the Commander and then commenced his monumental task to repair all the internal injuries, wondering all the time if he would lose the Commander during the surgeries and have to make the dreaded call to the Captain.

* * * *

One day went by and then two. Each morning and night the Doctor reported to the Captain that 'the Commander was still here, if barely'. She wanted desperately to go see him but knew he would not know if she was there or not. And besides, until the Doctor finished all of the internal repair, all the surgeries, plus everything else he had to treat and then got around to the Dermal Regeneration treatments to make Chakotay look like her First Officer again, she honestly didn't know if she could take once again looking at this dear man in his condition. That first time had almost done her in and it took every ounce of her strength to keep from throwing up or turning her head. To have seen his condition in person was a hundred times worse than seeing him on the screen and she simply didn't want to remember Chakotay in that condition. She clenched her teeth, hoped, and even fervently prayed constantly, that he would survive.

The crew constantly asked, whenever they saw her in the corridors or on the Bridge, how the Commander was, and all she could do was smile and say 'he's still here.'

On the third morning the Doctor hastily summoned her to Sick Bay and when she raced in she saw the Doctor working on B'Elanna.

"What happened Doctor?"

"She snuck in here and took a look at the Commander, that's what happened, Captain!" he said angrily. "And now she has lost her breakfast all over my Sick Bay and fainted. I have just now revived her."

Kathryn walked over to B'Elanna and looked down at the still groggy woman. Tears were in this strong half-Klingon's eyes and she was muttering over and over, "Oh my God, Oh my God."

"B'Elanna, why did you look?" asked Janeway quietly.

"I had to see him Captain," she whispered, "He's my friend. I just had to and now . . . Oh my God, Captain. He doesn't even look human! Why don't you just let him die and be in peace?"

"The Doctor is not trying to work any miracles, B'Elanna. He is just trying to alleviate the pain and while doing that treating some of his wounds. Whether Chakotay lives or dies is really up to him," she said quietly, "And so far he has not shown an inclination to give up."

B'Elanna just shook her head. "How could anyone do something like that to another person?"

"I don't know B'Elanna. I just don't know. Look, you can take the rest of the day off, but please, don't tell anyone you saw Chakotay. I'll keep you posted personally . . . on everything."

B'Elanna sat up and nodded her head. "I promise Captain, but I need to go to work. I'm sorry. It's just that as his friend I wanted to visit him. I just didn't expect to see what I did, and I'll never get that image out of my mind . . . never in a million years! "

"Neither will I," Janeway whispered, agony clearly evident in her eyes.

Seeing Janeway's expression and realizing she was suffering as much if not more than anyone else, she unexpectedly reached out and gave the Captain a hug, smiled in embarrassment and then left Sick Bay. The Captain looked at the Doctor, who was still standing nearby, and still very angry.

"Is there a way to keep people out Doctor? I know some crewmembers need treatment at times, but we can't have them coming in and expecting to say hello or thank you to Chakotay and then peek into the curtain and see his condition."

"Short of locking the doors, a force field might do it, Captain."

"Have you deactivated yourself since Chakotay got here?"

"Not long. I had just given myself ten minutes this morning and as luck would have it that's when Lt. Torres walked in."

"All right. I want you to deactivate yourself periodically so let's put him into the isolation ward, put the force field up, yet still keep a curtain around him"

"They could deactivate the force field, Captain, if they wanted to look bad enough."

"Not if I put my command code to the Computer, and state that it's only you or I that releases it."

"Well it would be you then as I can walk right through the force field."

"Fine let's do it," and Kathryn initiated her command code for the force field, let the doctor initiate transporting Chakotay to the new bed, the force field was activated and once satisfied the move went well, she nodded to the doctor and left.

While she walked down a corridor, she was acutely aware of the subdued behavior of the crew. Crewmen would just nod and give her a grim smile, but no longer asked about Chakotay, even though she could see the question in their eyes.

All Decks, various departments and Mess Hall were silent and as crewmembers walked about they basically whispered to one another. There wasn't any of the usual banter or joking in any of the departments and the Bridge was the most noticeable in that regard. Everyone was just going about their business, and it was obvious their minds were on the condition of their heroic First Officer.

A week went by, and as required by the Captain, the doctor reported every morning and evening on Chakotay's condition and what treatment had been done that day and the results, if any, that were accomplished. This evening he had reported that basically all internal work had finally been completed with various surgeries: he had stopped all internal bleeding, repaired the gall bladder, liver and kidneys, as well as the knife and phaser wounds, all broken bones had been repaired and all the abdomen leaks had finally been sutured. He had had a difficult time with that all week, each day thinking he had repaired it only to find Chakotay's temperature spiking again in a few hours. Several small leaks had eventually been found, a couple of them virtually pin pricks that the Tri Corder seemed to keep missing for some reason.

Chakotay was still heavily sedated and filled, "almost to overflowing" with anti- inflammatory medication.

On the seventh day the Doctor said, "The Commander actually needs more sedatives, but if I give him any more Captain he just might die from an overdose. He really needs more to alleviate the pain, as he has actually moaned a couple of times today as I worked on him, but I don't dare!"

"From what you are saying doctor, he is going to survive?"

"I wouldn't be so bold as to say that Captain. He still has just a faint heartbeat but there was one more 'squiggle' in his brain wave this morning."

Kathryn smiled at that word. The doctor was definitely trying to talk in language she could understand. "Thank you doctor. What is next?"

"Well I believe I can finally start some Dermal Regeneration on his face. The infection from the whipping and burns is abating quite well on his face and chest due to the constant medication I am having to inject, but the rest . . . I'm very concerned about, especially if I cannot administer any more medication!"

"What do you mean?"

The whipping the Commander received was quite brutal from the waist down. His genitalia and legs are still very badly infected and raw, despite my treatment. I just don't know if that area . . ."

Kathryn squeezed her eyes shut. "Just do the best you can Doctor," she whispered. "Report to me in the morning."

The following morning Janeway had not as yet received her report and called to the doctor, only to be told he was quite busy as during the night five crewmen had apparently been injured in a small explosion in Maintenance. She nodded, reminded him to call her when he could, then reported to the Bridge.

At mid morning as she sat quietly in her chair, the doctor's excited voice came over the Comm line.

"Sick Bay to Captain Janeway!"

Kathryn sat up straight. "Yes doctor?" As she responded she was aware the entire Bridge crew had gotten deathly silent.

"I'm late with my report I know, but I do want to tell you that the Commander's heart beat just became louder – well at least one beat did."

"Explain," said Janeway as she looked down at Tom who had swiveled around to face her.

"Well as you know his heartbeat was barely discernible and his brain wave pattern almost flat, but both changed this morning. There is a definite heartbeat now and another squiggle has appeared in the brain wave beyond the one I told you of last night. I don't know how, and I'm not saying this is a fact yet, but it's just possible the Commander might make it after all – although in what condition I wouldn't even hazard a guess."

Tom smiled a great big smile and as Kathryn glanced around the Bridge she saw other smiles. She smiled herself at the news. Things did indeed seem to be better today.

However two days later things changed. Chakotay had taken a sudden and unexpected turn for the worse and the doctor had called her shortly after dinner. She sat now at Chakotay's bedside and stared at his face. The doctor was still working on it and although better than before, it was still almost grotesque to see. She gently patted his hand and fought the lump in her throat. Then she leaned forward, so her face was close to his and whispered into his ear.

"Don't you dare leave me now, Chakotay! Not after surviving this long. You said you would die for me but don't you know that I couldn't survive without you in my life? If you leave me now you will take the very heart out me, so fight Chakotay. Don't leave me. I still want to marry you, to be your wife, so please don't give up."

She spent most of the night in Sick Bay, touching his hand and at times gently rubbing his cheek with the other. At last the danger seemed to have passed as his high temperature slowly returned to normal and she almost staggered out of the room, and lay down in her quarters for a brief one hour rest before her shift began the next morning.

Four days later the doctor again hailed the Captain on the Bridge. "Captain would you please come immediately to Sick Bay?" His tone, so serious, Kathryn's heart plummeted into her stomach, and her mind roared, this is it. I've lost him! Rising slowly, she turned the Bridge over to Tuvok, said, "I'm on my way Doctor," and headed off the Bridge. As the doors swished open and she walked through, she felt every pair of eyes from the Bridge crew boring into the back of her head Once out in the corridor, however, she broke into a trot, cursed the slowness of the Turbo Lift and finally made it to Sick Bay.

Upon arrival at Sick Bay she saw the Doctor inside the isolation ward. He quickly walked through the force field and to her side and said she had to see the Commander.

Her stomach momentarily recoiled at that thought, but after the doctor released the force field and she had put on a surgical mask, she took a deep breath, stepped into the room and hesitated as the Doctor reached for the curtain. As he pulled back one edge far enough for her to step to Chakotay's bedside, she gasped at what she saw and her hand flew to her cheek.

"Doctor, you have repaired his face! It's perfect. It's Commander Chakotay again!"

The Doctor beamed in pride. "Yes. I think I did an absolutely amazing job. I have had to go very slow mind you and let each day's regeneration treatment completely heal before continuing, because of how severe and deep the wounds are. This, of course, delays the Dermal Regeneration process quite badly, but I do believe I have repaired his face, Captain."

"Indeed you have, Doctor. It's wonderful to see that face again."

"I believe I have also satisfactorily repaired his Larynx Captain. His voice might be a little hoarse, but he will be able to speak. However, there is another big problem," he said with a frown. "I haven't mentioned it too much before but it concerns his eyes. I'm not sure if I can repair them and it's quite possible the Commander might not be able to see, that he will be blind. I have made some simple repairs, but I don't have the tools or the expertise for the extensive work that needs to be done, Captain. I'm sorry."

"But you don't know for sure?"

"Not entirely, but from my examination, it is easy to see the extensive damage. As you may have noticed I have kept the lighting subdued, because of his eyes. Of course he has never opened his eyes but may I suggest that whenever we come upon a planet with superior technology you allow me to inquire of the medical personnel if they have any knowledge of advanced treatment for eye injuries that have virtually been destroyed?"

"Agreed Doctor. As a matter of fact we are about three days away from the next system, and Mr. Tuvok has informed me it is highly developed technology wise. Possibly their medical knowledge is also more highly developed and will help in some manner. I will make an inquiry as soon as we are closer. Good job Doctor," she said with a smile. She took one last look at Chakotay's restored and once again handsome countenance, and left to report back to the Bridge.

The doctor looked down at Chakotay and smiled. Then humming a tune of his favorite opera, he picked up the Dermal Regenerator and started to work on Chakotay's neck and chest.

Voyager slowly circled the planet of Dhara and away teams were already on the planet making arrangements to beam up various fresh foods and supplies, which Captain Janeway had bargained for. True to her word she had inquired of medical knowledge regarding damaged eyes and been referred to Doctor Lhelar, the foremost expert at their Ocular Medical Center. After a brief conversation with the doctor, she arranged to have him beam up to Voyager and meet her doctor in Sick Bay to examine Chakotay.

As Janeway and the EMH stood to one side, Dr. Lhelar stood over Chakotay, looking intently through an instrument that closely resembled Earth's Ophthalmoscope, although it appeared to have several more adjustments than the instrument the EMH was familiar with. After approximately ten minutes, which felt like ten hours to Kathryn, he straightened and looked at them.

"Commander Chakotay's eyes are extensively damaged and he is at the moment certifiably blind."

Kathryn's heart dropped and the doctor frowned. "Are you saying you can't help him, Dr. Lhelar?" he asked.

"Not quite, doctor. We do have a means of repairing tissue as well as implementing regeneration, but I need some of my other surgical instruments to do this, as well as my assistant. That is of course, if you wish me to operate."

"Of course we do," said the doctor immediately.

"Not so fast, doctor," countered Janeway. "We need to have more information. Doctor Lhelar, I wasn't aware you could make eye tissue regenerate. I thought you had to transplant. Please explain more of your treatment."

The doctor smiled, a sweet, if condescending, smile. "The eye, as you probably know is a very complex organ and thought to be irreparable concerning some injuries. It has taken us centuries to develop, but through constant study and development by our Ocular specialists, we now have a technique that will repair as well as instigate and start a regeneration process by the eye. The techniques we have now developed allow us to repair most eye injuries. If I may brag we have become quite adept in this field and the God's must have been looking out for you to show up at our planet. Neighboring planets send patients to us all the time, but I must admit, the Commander's damage is the worst I have ever seen."

"What have you determined, doctor?" asked the EMH.

"Well the Visual Cortex in the back of the brain and concerned with vision, appears undamaged. However, the Sclera, Cornea and Iris as well as the Retina and Conjunctiva appear to have suffered a great deal of damage. What happened anyway?"

Janeway frowned. "He was severely beaten in a so-called 'sacrifice' at a . . ."

"Ah . . . the planet Keshen if I'm not mistaken. We stay well away from that planet, Captain."

"Why don't they have a warning buoy? What they do is inhumane!" said Janeway is a shocked and angry tone.

"Warning buoy?" laughed the doctor. "No, no. That is their entertainment Captain. The beating is beamed to the entire planet, so they have no intention of warning anyone. It would deprive them of future victims. But I am surprised you offered a sacrifice and astonished you got him back!"

"We did not offer Chakotay," snarled Janeway. "He went on his own to protect the ship."

Doctor Lhelar looked down at Chakotay and sighed. "Admirable act of sacrifice I must say. Well this explains his injuries. A blunt trauma, such as he has obviously sustained, has resulted in the tearing of the Iris, a rupture of the Sclera as well as retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage, just to name the most known and obvious damage. There is much more of course, including the need for much microsurgery, but I won't bore you with technical jargon. So . . . do you wish me to attempt to repair as much as I can, without a guarantee of course, that he will see again?"

Janeway and the EMH walked to one side and briefly conferred. Kathryn turned back to Dr. Lhelar. "I'm afraid we don't have anything to offer you for such services."

"Don't be concerned with that Captain. I'm sure we can work something out, but if you wish me to do this, I should start immediately and I do need several instruments as well as one of my assistants as I previously mentioned. It will be a good learning experience for us to work on such severe damage to see what our process accomplishes."

Janeway was quiet a moment and then nodded her head. She had to help Chakotay in any way possible. "All right Dr. But I want my EMH right beside you and assisting if needed."

"We can do that. Now if I may contact my office?"

Within an hour Dr. Lhelar, his assistant Dr. Mhale and the EMH were beginning the operation.

Six hours later Janeway was called back to Sick Bay. She had stayed at the beginning but had been delicately instructed by Dr. Lhelar, after one hour of noticing her pace that it would be a long process and she would be better off on the Bridge.

As she walked into Sick Bay she noticed Dr. Lhelar and Mhale were still bent over Chakotay. The doctor came through the force field and smiled.

"They are still operating on Chakotay?" asked Janeway.

"Just finishing up, Captain. Their technique is absolutely marvelous! I have learned so much!" he gushed.

At that moment both Dr's straightened and put their instruments down. Dr. Mhale appeared to place something over Chakotay's eyes as Dr. Lhelar motioned for the force field to be taken down, and then both doctors left the area and joined Captain Janeway.

Dr. Lhelar smiled. "Captain we have finally finished. It was quite an ordeal but I do believe we accomplished a great deal."

"It was a success? Chakotay will be able to see?"

He shook his head and smiled. "I have no idea at the present time. We repaired a great deal and instigated the regeneration process with our technique. Dr. Mhale assured me it had been initiated during the last hour.

"Doctor," he said as he turned to the EMH, "You must keep his eyes covered for two weeks, and then as I told you, peel off one layer a day. It will take 4-5 days but his eyes must adjust gradually to any light. You did well keeping him in a subdued lighting and a sterile environment following your retrieval of him."

The doctor beamed proudly at that compliment.

"Just what is the prognosis, Dr.? Do you have any idea?" asked Janeway.

"Not really and you will be long gone when the eyes are uncovered, so I will never know the result myself. All we can do is hope, Captain, but I somehow feel that with what we did there is a chance he will have some vision. How much I can't say, but at least for your sake and his, I will pray that he will regain his vision."

"Thank you doctor. This has been most generous of you to offer your expertise. Is there anything we can offer you in payment?"

Dr Lheler looked at the EMH and pursed his lips. "Your Medical TriCorder and Dermal Regenerator are intriguing, Captain. We have similar instruments, but yours seem to offer a trifle difference and a couple more readings than ours. I'm sure our Medical Hospital and Dermal Center would love to study them and possibly incorporate some of those features into ours."

Kathryn smiled. "We will make you one of each immediately. Now, may I see Chakotay?"

"Of course, but you can't see anything and he is deeply sedated."

Kathryn immediately put on a facemask, walked into the isolation room and peered down at Chakotay. He lay so still and peaceful, but the black patches on his eyes gave him an appearance like the old wild west robber she remembered pictures of from her academy days.

Leaning down she whispered, "Thank you for fighting to survive Chakotay, and I hope that in a little over two weeks those beautiful brown eyes will once again see the world around you, and rest assured, my dear Chakotay, I will be here for that moment. So keep fighting my dear man. We will face the rest of this trip together."

The doctor had finished replicating the instruments and as she stepped out of the room the force field was once again initiated. Janeway suggested a meal, such as they could offer with Neelix' cooking, but both Lheler and Mhale declined, saying it was late and they should get back and check in on their own patients.

After escorting them to the Transporter Room and they had departed, following last minute instructions for Chakotay's care, Kathryn had given the order to leave orbit and now stood in her quarters, staring out her window. She fervently wished Chakotay would once again see, and was very grateful for the surgery performed. But if nothing else, the doctor had reported a short time ago that Chakotay had withstood the surgery and his heart rate had again improved, so it seemed to her he was going to live and that was the most important thing in the world to her. She would take care of him if he had problems, as would the members of the crew. Whether he would accept such a condition remained to be seen.

~ ~ ~ ~

The two weeks seemed to drag, not only for her, but the crew. They did have two hair-raising moments, however, when alien ships happened upon them and immediately started firing, causing Janeway no choice but to fight back. Voyager sustained a great deal of damage from the second encounter and crews were still busy with the repair work.

During this second battle, the doctor had to strap Chakotay down in his bed so he wouldn't be thrown onto the floor. Afterwards he complained bitterly to Janeway that if a fight was brewing she could at least warn him ahead of time.

The day after this battle the doctor removed the first layer from Chakotay's eyes and during the following three days removed the next layer until he was at the final one. During this time he had worked extensively with the Dermal Regenerator and made great progress on repairing Chakotay's neck, chest and stomach and was now ready to start on a leg. He had made a decision to work on the sensitive are of the genitalia last

In addition in one of the last reports the doctor stated he had greatly decreased the use of the anti-inflammatory medication, as he felt that danger was now past. However, he was still keeping him sedated, but now at a level where the doctor said, it was possible the Commander could hear and understand all conversation around him, but he would be unable to respond.

The time arrived for the removal of the last covering from his eyes. Kathryn stood nervously as the doctor started. He had turned the lighting completely off in this area and as he removed the last vestiges of covering he, along with the Captain, stared apprehensively at Chakotay.

It was several minutes before the doctor discerned a slight frown, causing him to smile.

"He has frowned Captain! This means he is receiving some sort of light stimuli, but we won't know if he can see for several days yet."

The doctor then lifted one of Chakotay's eyelids and peered intently at the eye as he slowly moved a penlight along his cheek below his eye. Chakotay moaned and turned his head, causing Kathryn to inhale.

"No worries Captain," assured the doctor. "I didn't put the light directly on his eye. He will open them gradually over time as he regains consciousness."

"Are you going to bring him completely out of sedation doctor?"

"Gradually Captain, but not completely. I still have some extensive treatment on his legs and genitalia and at times I might have to deepen the medication to prevent undue suffering."

"He has been sedated for about a month, Doctor. Isn't that . . . ?"

"It is a long time, but it has been needed, I assure you. I suspect in less than two weeks I shall be able to revive him . . . and don't tell me, I know you want to be here at that moment."

Kathryn gently placed a hand on Chakotay's cheek as she whispered, "Without a doubt, doctor, without a doubt."

~ ~ ~ ~

Two weeks later, the doctor had finished repairing Chakotay's legs and had even been able to do more on the genitals than he thought. At this point, with Chakotay once again looking human, he gradually decreased the medication keeping Chakotay unconscious.

This morning, based on his readings, the doctor had summoned the Captain. Chakotay was about to wake up.

As she stood at his bedside and noted the fluttering of his eyes and a turning of his head, her heart was hammering. Would he be able to see? Would he be able to talk? What would he say?

Slowly Chakotay's eyes opened. He seemed to stare up at the ceiling, but gave no recognition of anything. He reached up and rubbed at his eyes with one hand and then turned his head.

"Where am I?" came his whispered, croaking voice to no one in particular.

Kathryn took hold of his hand and bent down close to his face. "You are on Voyager, Chakotay. Can you see me?"

"Voyager? How can that be? See? No, my eyes are blurry. Is that you Kathryn?"

"Yes, Chakotay," she said with tears forming in her eyes. "Yes, it's Kathryn. Welcome back! You had us quite worried."

He reached out for her face and gently felt it. She took hold of it and held it to her cheek.

"How did I get here?" he asked in a very weak, hoarse voice.

"That's a long story, Chakotay. One we will have a long time to tell you about," came her soft reply. She then looked up at the doctor who immediately bent over the Commander from the other side of the bed and moved his TriCorder around.

"Glad you let me do my job, Captain," he grumbled. Looking at the readings he pursed his lips and said, "Well the readings aren't great but they are certainly not as bad as six weeks ago!"

"Six weeks? I've been here six weeks," mumbled Chakotay. Then his eyes closed and he soon was asleep.

"What do you say doctor?"

"Well, Captain, barring an unforeseen setback, it is obvious now that he is going to survive. The readings are not normal but passable, his mind seems normal, at least for the little he talked, but that still doesn't complete this saga. There is still a lot of work to be done, plus rehabilitation."

"What about his eyes? He said things were blurry."

"Understandable and hopefully they are still in a healing stage from all the surgery Dr Lheler did about three or more weeks ago. It's the first time he has actually opened his eyes you know, so give it time, Captain. Now, with the Commander back to sleep, I think I need a little 'down time' myself. Would it be possible to have Mr. Paris fill in for me the rest of the day? I'm going to give the Commander a light sedative to keep him asleep until morning."

"Agreed, Doctor," said Janeway with a smile as she stood looking down on Chakotay. Her heart felt like it was going to fly out of her chest it was racing so fast. Chakotay was going to make it!

~ ~ ~ ~

As the following week slowly went by, Kathryn visibly relaxed, as did the crew when informed that Chakotay had finally regained consciousness. The doctor continued working on him, repairing, regenerating and 'fine tuning' some previous repairs. Chakotay himself, was briefly awake each day, but the doctor kept just enough sedative in him to keep him sleepy.

His eyes seemed to get better each day and the blurriness was slowly dissipating. Additionally, he could now tell various colors. The doctor also put an exercise machine on his legs to stimulate the muscles, as well as lightly massaging them. However this was still painful so the doctor did not do it every day.

Unbeknownst to the Captain, the doctor had lately gotten Chakotay up once a day, at first just sitting on the edge of his bed, then standing up and finally two steps forward and two back, but he was still so weak he would gratefully collapse back in bed.

Two months had now gone by since Chakotay's beating and he was still in Sick Bay, but buoyed now as the doctor was allowing visits from the crew. Kathryn sat in her chair on the Bridge staring blankly at the screen. The last few days had been very quiet, with no planets and thus no alien attacks. She heard the Bridge doors swish open but did not turn to look as people came and went periodically. Suddenly she heard a gasp and then a murmur arose from the bridge crew. Turning her head she looked back at the doors and rose to her feet, her mouth open in total shock.

Chakotay stood at the doors, in uniform, but sweat pouring from his face and breathing heavily.

"Permission to come aboard the bridge, Captain," he gasped.

"Chakotay!" said Kathryn as she almost ran to his position and then assisted him to Tuvok's seat at his Security station. "What on earth are you doing!"

He smiled weakly. "The walk to the Bridge is a lot longer than I remember it, Kath . . . Captain."

"Sick Bay to the Captain," then rang through the Bridge. "I've lost the Commander!" came the shocked voice of the doctor.

Kathryn smiled. "He's right here doctor. Worse for the wear and completely worn out."

"I didn't give him permission to leave Sick Bay! Commander Chakotay you get right back here!"

"He wouldn't be able to make that walk again, Doctor," said Kathryn as she continued to smile at Chakotay. "I think we will have to initiate site to site transport."

"I'll do it immediately," said the highly flustered and angry EMH.

"Give me a minute, doctor," she said as nodded for Tuvok to move away. Once he was down on the lower section of the Bridge, Kathryn bent low so only Chakotay could hear her.

"Chakotay, I meant what I said two months ago. We have an appointment tomorrow evening at eighteen hundred hours. I want you to meet me in Holodeck Two at that time."

Chakotay frowned. "Kathryn, believe it or not I heard what you said that time and also later on, and I know you said those things to get me to fight to stay alive, but you don't have to do . . ."

She placed a finger over his mouth to stop him.

"I not only want to do it, I eagerly and passionately want to do it, so no arguments, Chakotay. Tomorrow night at 1800 hours, all right?"

Chakotay stared at her and then his eyes seemed to light up and fill with immense love. Nodding his head he replied, "Is that an order, Captain?" he said with a smile.

"No, it's a request, but don't you dare turn me down," she said softly with a big grin. He nodded acquiescence and Kathryn then had the doctor initiate transport back to Sick Bay.

As she walked back to her chair she noted with an almost guilty pleasure everyone looking at her. She looked around at everyone and then sat down.

"It appears the Commander is doing better than even I expected."

Murmurs of agreement followed with Harry saying, "What a surprise to see him Captain. And although he looked very weak, he really looks great!"

Kathryn nodded, but her mind was already on tomorrow.

The following day seemed normal to everyone. The duties were taken care of in a precise manner, there were no problems and soon it was almost the end of the Alpha shift. At fifteen minutes before the shift ended, the Captain suddenly stood and looking at Tuvok said, "Ships wide communication, Mr. Tuvok."

He looked quizzically at her a moment and then after tapping his panel nodded. "The line is open, Captain.

"Attention everyone, this is the Captain. I have a very important announcement to make."

All around the Bridge, activity stopped and they turned toward her. She imagined the same thing happening around the ship.

"I have the immense pleasure of announcing that tonight at 1800 hours, just about an hour from now, in Holodeck 2, Commander Chakotay and I will be married."

Eyes and mouths opened wide around the Bridge.

"I made a vow to Chakotay when he was at death's door almost two months ago, that if he lived I would marry him. I had no idea if he could hear me, but I wanted him to know I loved him and did not want to lose him. He apparently heard and accepted the challenge and miraculously, as some of you saw yesterday, he is getting back on his feet. Therefore, tonight I eagerly and passionately honor my vow.

"As the Holodeck will not accommodate everyone, I invite all the Senior Officers to attend. The ceremony will be followed by a reception in the Cargo Bay and everyone is invited. As some of you will be on duty, I am also arranging for the ceremony to be piped throughout the ship so you can at least witness it on screen. And now I have to get busy. That is all."

With that she turned and walked off the Bridge.

The Officers first stared at the closing doors and then looked around in amazement at each other. Soon smiles broke out and then the shocked silence was broken with loud cheers. Tuvok tried his best to calm everyone down to no avail and as the duty hours ended, he walked off the Bridge, followed by smiling, whooping and hollering crewmembers.

All the officers were present in the Holodeck at fifteen minutes before the appointed hour. B'Elanna marveled at the decorations. The scene was of a forest with a cabin nearby. An arch was to one side and obviously where the ceremony would take place. Beyond it a rippling stream could be seen as well as heard, as it's soft melodic gurgling meandered off into the distance. The singing chirp of a bird could be heard beyond the cabin, and added to the romantic essence of the scene.

"The Captain couldn't have done this in one hour," mused Tom.

"No, but it's such a serene, peaceful setting," answered B'Elanna. "It's just so perfect."

At exactly 1800 hours music filtered into the Holodeck and everyone listened quietly to the words: "This is the moment – I've waited for – I can hear my heart singing – "

"Wow that is a beautiful song," whispered Harry. I wonder what the name is?"

As the song continued Chakotay walked out from beside the cabin and to the arch and then stood silently. He was wearing a blue shirt with navy slacks and looked very handsome. It was obvious to all that he was still very weak, but his eyes shone with happiness. Then the door of the cabin opened and Kathryn, on the arm of Tuvok, walked out and toward Chakotay, as the words of the song now said, "Here I am now dear – You're my love – "

Chakotay smiled at Kathryn as she walked to his side. She was simply dressed, in a light green dress, her hair hanging down to her shoulders with a string of pearls and matching earrings. She took Chakotay's arm and Tuvok stepped in front of them. The Holodeck was extremely quiet now, with the words and music now softened in the background.

Tuvok looked at his Captain and Commander and then looked out at the Officers.

"A few moments ago, Captain Janeway gave me the power to perform this ceremony, the joining of Kathryn Janeway and Chakotay in the rite of marriage. They take this joining as the culmination in their long traveled road of coming together, albeit in a far off Delta quadrant. Before completing the ritual and the exchange of rings, the couple wishes to exchange their own personal vows."

Kathryn turned to Chakotay, and taking his hand smiled. "Seven years ago you came into my life. In those seven years, you have counseled and served me as First Officer of Voyager. Two months ago you offered your life – not to save the ship, or the crew, or it's Captain, but to save me, Kathryn. That sacrifice gave you untold pain and hardship of immense proportions and it is only through the grace of your Spirits and your sheer determination to live that you are standing with me here today. I told you the moment we had you back on Voyager that I loved you and that if you would live, I would marry you, not knowing if you could even hear me. I made that vow not to challenge you to survive, but because I was scared of losing you without you ever knowing my true feelings. You did survive and I now eagerly and lovingly offer myself to you as your wife and tell you freely and openly that I love you Chakotay."

During Kathryn's words, Chakotay had stood and listened, and slowly tears formed in his eyes. As she finished and then smiled at him, he squeezed her hand and quietly cleared his throat.

"Kathryn. I have loved you for all of these seven years and stand here now in awe that you are about to become my wife. I told you then and I repeat it now, that I would die for you to protect and keep you safe, as I love you that much. I make this vow to you that I will always be at your side, protecting you from any danger, not only as your First Officer, but also as a loving husband. I love you with every fiber of my being, my beloved Kathryn."

As the couple quietly faced Tuvok, the words of the song were again heard throughout the assemblage. "Promise me that you will leave me never – I will love you longer than forever - "

Tuvok nodded to Naomi, standing in the front row and with a large smile she walked forward with a small box, presented it to Tuvok and then returned to her place. Tuvok opened the box and said, "Captain Janeway, will you place your ring on the Commander's finger and repeat your vows."

Kathryn took the large ring and as she slid it onto Chakotay's finger said, "With this ring I take you, Chakotay as my husband. I will love and cherish you beyond forever."

Next Chakotay took the small ring and as he nervously slid it onto Kathryn's finger, smiled and said, in a voice now raw with emotion, "With this ring I take you, Kathryn, as my wife, and I promise to love and cherish and protect you, beyond forever."

"With those vows and the exchange of rings, and in the sight of all these present, as well as those watching from a distance, I hereby pronounce you husband and wife, and if I may add my own wish, live long and prosper," said Tuvok. Shortly he cleared his throat as Kathryn and Chakotay just stared at one another, eyes filled with tears to almost running over. "You may kiss your bride, Commander, or at least that is what I'm told happens now in Earth ceremonies."

The officers watching the ceremony chuckled.

Chakotay then lowered his head and gave Kathryn a short, gentle kiss and then wrapped both arms around her and held her tight as he murmured into her ear, "Oh Gods, Kathryn, I love you so much and I am so happy, but I feel like my legs are going to collapse!"

Kathryn held onto him tightly, feeling his body trembling and his weight in her arms. Knowing how weak he was, she said, "I know my darling. Hang on a minute longer."

The song reached it's final words with: "Now that we are one – clouds wont hide the sun -- -- -- On this our wedding day – I do love you with all my heart."

As the song ended she partly released Chakotay and turned to the group with a big smile. "See you all in the Cargo Bay in a short while. Chakotay needs a bit of a rest. Transporter room, two to beam to the Captain's quarters." The twinkling commenced and soon they were gone.

Immediately the room burst into a buzz of conversation, laughter and large smiles as they all turned to leave the Holodeck and head for the Cargo Bay. This was a night they would all remember!!

As Kathryn and Chakotay materialized in her quarters she immediately helped him to the couch. He collapsed with a huge sigh and then smiled his thanks.

"I didn't think I was going to make it for a minute.'

Kathryn laughed. "Sweetheart, after what you previously went through I knew you could hold on through your sheer determination. Now rest for thirty minutes and then we'll beam to the reception." She sat down beside him and as he put his arms around her she lowered her head and placed it on his shoulder and both sat thus, quiet, pleased, happy and contented.

In the Cargo Bay there was a cacophony of noise, with everyone excitedly talking about what they had just witnessed.

"It was just so beautiful," murmured B'Elanna.

"Yeah and it's about time, too," agreed Harry. "Too bad it took such a horrendous moment to wake up the Captain."

"But look at all this B'Elanna," said Tom as he looked around. "All the decorations, the food, the Holodeck, the music . . . the Captain couldn't have done all this since last night. She was on the Bridge all day!"

"Oh Tom, you ninny," laughed B'Elanna. "She has had two months to plan for this night!"

"Yeah but what if . . . ?" and he stopped.

"No what ifs. You know the way Chakotay felt about the Captain, and that if he heard her in anyway, he was going to survive," said B'Elanna.

A few moments later Kathryn and Chakotay appeared on a small stage at one end of the room. Two chairs were there and they immediately sat down to wait for their appearance to be seen. It didn't take long and soon the couple was encircled by crewmembers shouting out their congratulations and best wishes. The men shook Chakotay's hand while some gave him a congratulatory hug, on the wedding as well as surviving. Kathryn received hugs, with permission, of course, from several of the women and finally when Naomi made it to her asked if she would mind bringing two plates of food and Naomi quickly ran off to the buffet table.

"Captain, may I ask a question?" said Tom as he kneeled at her side.

"Of course, Tom," she smiled.

"Well you obviously have been planning this event ever since . . ." and he stopped his sentence and then continued with, "but Naomi with the rings and Tuvok with the power?"

Kathryn reached out for Chakotay's hand now that it was free from all the handshakes. "I knew this man wouldn't die if he heard me at all and so, yes, I started planning from that moment. As for Naomi, I called her to my room after I left the Bridge and asked if she would be the ring bearer. She of course, was ecstatic and so I gave her the box and told her what to do. I also contacted Tuvok and had him meet me early in the cabin, where I turned over Voyager, momentarily mind you, to him, thus giving him the power to marry us."

"What was the name of that song? It was beautiful and the words so perfect," asked Harry as he joined them.

"It's an old 20th Century Earth song called "The Hawaiian Wedding Song" and there were two versions I couldn't decide between. A man called Andy Williams sang one version, and the other was by a gentleman named Elvis Presley. So I simply duped them together so that at certain times the words that were heard were poignant for the moment. Their voices were similar enough that I didn't think it would be too noticeable. But you are right. The words were just perfect."

"I am just so happy for you, two," said B'Elanna with a big grin. "Are you going to have a honeymoon at all or does Chakotay have to go back to Sick Bay?"

Kathryn smiled. "Chakotay and I will spend the next two days at that cabin. The doctor will come morning and night on my signal, for not only a check up but the massage he says must be given, and I will keep one line open to Tuvok in the event of an emergency. That said, I think Chakotay is exhausted . . . more than exhausted," she said with a smile as she looked at his tired face. "So it's time we left." She quietly contacted the Transporter room and moments later the two appeared at the door of the cabin.

As Kathryn pushed the door open Chakotay said quickly, "Wait!" Kathryn looked at him and he smiled. "It's a tradition of my people that the husband must carry his bride over the transom, Kathryn."

"Chakotay! You are too weak. We can do that another time."

"No! Another time is not the first time, Kathryn. It must be now . . . please, I can do it."

Kathryn hesitated, but knowing how important that was to him nodded her head. He moved to her and placing his hands behind her knees and around her shoulders, lifted, took two quick steps to and over the transom and then dropped to his knees and then to the floor, sending both of them sprawling.

Chakotay was frightened he had hurt her, but Kathryn started laughing and couldn't stop. Soon Chakotay joined her in the laughter and that sound echoed throughout the forest. At last they got themselves under control and Kathryn shut the door and announced that Chakotay must get to bed. He had endured a strenuous day.

He looked at her embarrassed. "Kathryn, the doctor had a long talk with me this morning, and, well, I . . . I can't make love to you. I can't . . ."

"Oh Chakotay," said Kathryn as she immediately put her arms around him. "I'm not worried about that. I know the situation. Don't concern yourself with that. In time your will be able to perform that function, but for now I am just so deliriously happy you are alive and my husband."

"But I can't consummate our marriage and it must be done the first night, Kathryn," he said with a totally sad look on his face. "Maybe . . . maybe you could . . ."

Kathryn squeezed her arms around him very tight and she whispered into his ear, "With pleasure, my darling."

At that moment Kathryn's Comm badge chirped. It was the doctor.

"Captain, I haven't heard from you. Have you forgotten I must check the Commander?"

"I'm afraid I did forget in all the excitement, doctor. Transport yourself here now," she said with a small smile at Chakotay.

Moments later the doctor appeared with his Med Kit. Following the exam the doctor said that Commander Chakotay was obviously extremely tired and he should immediately get to bed. Kathryn agreed and then walked the doctor outside.

"Doctor there is something I want to ask you. I know Chakotay's situation and he told me you had a long talk with him this morning, but I need to know . . . this is rather delicate as well as embarrassing, but . . . well, is he capable of erections?" she finally blurted out while her face became flaming red.

"To some degree, yes Captain, with stimuli of some sort. At the end when I was repairing his genitals, twice he had an erectile function. The penis as you probably know appears to have a mind of it's own and he had one small and one almost complete erection, but it is the rest of the act that he can't . . . well, with such extreme damage he is not yet producing semen and therefore although there is an erectile function he is not capable of ejaculation and . . ."

"That's all I want to know, doctor," Kathryn hurriedly interrupted, her face getting hotter by the minute. "And also, you will not call me. I will call you when it is time for your visit. Effective immediately I am cutting off your hail."

"But," sputtered the EMH. "What if I need to get in touch with you? What if you forget to call me like you did now?"

"Chakotay was all right, was he not? So unless it's an emergency, in which case you can contact Tuvok and he will then contact me, it is I who will be hailing you. Goodnight doctor."

The doctor frowned but tapped his Mobile Emitter and disappeared.

Kathryn re-entered the cabin to find Chakotay standing nervously in the middle of the room.

"Is something wrong Kathryn?"

"Nothing is wrong. In fact everything is perfect. Now, let's get to bed."

As they slid beneath the sheets, Kathryn immediately snuggled up to Chakotay and as they put their arms around each other, she smiled and said, "Hello my husband."

Chakotay grinned like a kid. "Hello my beautiful wife," and their arms tightened around one another. Kathryn then raised her head and passionately kissed him, again and again with one free hand roaming and caressing his body. It didn't take long and in a few moments, Chakotay groaned.

"Kathryn, I'm . . . it's . . . I . . ."

"I know sweetheart," she whispered and a short time later Kathryn had consummated their marriage and both were soon fast asleep.

The two days seemed to fly by. They talked and laughed, walked in the woods and not only dangled their feet in the cold stream, but waded as well as splashed each other like young children. Chakotay's strength was gradually returning and the walks seemed to energize him. The doctor was summoned twice a day for the exam as well as the physical therapy of massage and certain exercises.

Then on the second night Kathryn became quiet, almost distant. Chakotay sensed it immediately.

"What's wrong Kathryn? Have I done something wrong?"

She looked at him with a forlorn child-like expression and tears spring to her eyes.

"No, I have," she said softly.

"What do you mean?" he said concern etched in his eyes.

"I have tried desperately to put it out of my mind and I succeeded for a while, but last night when you were sleeping I started to think about it and I can't put it out of my mind."

"I noticed you quiet today, but I just thought you were beginning to think about returning to duty."

"No, Chakotay. I have to talk to you about this. It's surfaced now as if this is the time."

"Tell me Kathryn," he said as he pulled her close and tightened his arms around her.

"During the Equinox incident, when I released the shields in the Cargo Bay . . . I . . . I'm not sure I would actually have put them back up."

"Of course you would have, Kathryn."

"I just don't know Chakotay. I was so angry and then to relieve you of duty! The person I needed the most. How could I do that?"

"You were angry at Captain Ransom, Kathryn and it just clouded your thinking for a while."

"But you tried to warn me and I wouldn't listen. Sometimes I am so stubborn . . ."

Chakotay kissed her, hard and then grinned. "Now just remember you said that not me. Look Kathryn, that time is past. Why are you bringing it up now?"

"My conscience has bothered me about that ever since. I keep wondering if I really would have killed Noah."

"No, no and no you wouldn't have," he said softly. "Everything worked out okay in the long run. Yes, you were overwrought about what Ransom had done and you had a right to be, but that is in the past. You didn't kill Noah, the nucleogenic life forms stopped attacking us after the Equinox exploded and you immediately put me back on duty. Now sweetheart, no more talking or even thinking about it. It's over and done with. You did nothing wrong!"

"Do you honestly believe that?"

"Yes I do, and I'm your First Officer. You know I would tell you if you were wrong."

"You tried to do just that."

"Sweetheart, sometimes you think too much. The Equinox situation is in the past, so promise me you wont worry about it any more. You did what any Starfleet Captain would in that situation. You went after Captain Ransom because of the horrendous things he was doing. It would make anyone with any sense of right and wrong, mad. Sometimes when people are very angry they lose complete control. You didn't. Despite everything you were still concerned for your ship and crew."

Kathryn stared at him for a moment and then seemed to relax. "Thank you sweetheart. I needed to hear that. I needed this conversation and I do feel better now."

"Good, now no more Equinox, okay?"

"Okay," she murmured as she stretched up and kissed him. "I love you so much and now that we are so happy I sometimes think back to the way I treated you during that time and I don't ever want to be that mad agai . . ."

Chakotay's lips came down on hers and when he broke the kiss he murmured, "No more. It's over, I love you and we are married. Let's concentrate on that trivial problem." Both burst out laughing and the subject of Equinox was closed.

During the evening of their final night Tuvok hailed Janeway.

"Is something wrong Tuvok?" she asked.

"No, Captain, as a matter of fact we are in a section of space where Mr. Kim says that as far as his sensors extend there is not another planet, so I am merely calling you to suggest you take another three or four days. It has been very quiet and I'm sure you and the Commander could use more private time together."

"Thank you for that consideration, Tuvok. And I'm going to take you up on it. Chakotay is enjoying it here immensely and I'm also finding it quite peaceful and restful. The serenity is helping a great deal in cleansing my mind as well as physically relaxing. See you in about four days then. Janeway out."

Four days later Kathryn and Chakotay walked out of the Holodeck and were met by an old fashioned tradition of rice being thrown at them. The corridor was lined with crewmembers and as they ran, ducked and laughed, Tom called out, "Thought by beaming away so suddenly you could get away from this did you?"

"Knowing you Tom, I should have known better," she said with a laugh as they ducked into the Turbo Lift, only to find themselves face-to-face with a devilishly grinning B'Elanna and Neelix.

"Congratulations!" they both called out as they threw rice and then all four laughed loudly until the Lift stopped and the doors slid open.

Kathryn stood there and slowly peaked around the corner. The corridor was empty so she and Chakotay hugged B'Elanna and Neelix and headed for the Captain's Quarters.

When her door opened they both stood there in shock. A wall between hers and Chakotay's quarters had been removed, making it one large residence. The remainder of the senior officers all stood to one side, grinning widely.

"What on earth? How did you people get in here?" asked an incredulous Captain.

"I'm afraid I am responsible, Captain," spoke up Tuvok. "Mr Paris and Mr Kim approached me with this plan following your marriage and I reluctantly agreed. I assure you they have not touched any of your personal possessions as I had Security on hand at all times, but if you are displeased I will take the responsibility."

Kathryn laughed. "I am not displeased Tuvok. In fact this is something Chakotay and I discussed while we were on our honeymoon. It's wonderful. Thank you all very much. Now I suggest you all go about your business and leave my husband and I to re-arrange the furniture."

The group protested that they would do that if told what to do, so a half hour later the furniture was all moved around and the group, and after receiving another thank you and 'see you on the Bridge at 0800 sharp' left, and Kathryn and Chakotay enjoyed their first night in their new 'home.'

Chakotay was released to their quarters and spent a great deal of time just resting. Of course he had to report to Sick Bay each morning, not only for a check up and physical therapy, but to endure more treatment the doctor felt was necessary.

Space was still quiet for another week. Then the following week Chakotay suddenly appeared at the Bridge doors and as Kathryn stood and looked up at him he said, "Permission to report for duty, Captain."

Kathryn immediately contacted the doctor and he confirmed he had released Chakotay to spend two to three hours a day on the bridge.

Kathryn smiled and as she looked up at Chakotay, still standing at the doors, raised her head and felt such pride and honor as she said, "Permission granted, Commander, and welcome back."

As Chakotay moved from the door, first Tom stood and started to clap and then everyone on the Bridge stood and faced him, smiling broadly and clapping loudly for him. Chakotay felt embarrassed, but at the same time immensely proud of such a welcome back to duty.

As Chakotay moved past the Security station Tuvok nodded his head and said, "Welcome back Commander."

Harry nodded his head and smiled. "It's good to have you back, sir."

Tom grinned and said, "Welcome back Chakotay. I'm glad to see you finally got off your backside." Chakotay smiled broadly at him as he moved to his chair and looked at it for a moment.

"I didn't think I would ever sit here again, Captain." He looked around the Bridge. "Thank you all. It's good to be back, even if for only a couple of hours a day."

Kathryn smiled proudly as Chakotay then sat down in his chair and slowly felt the arms, as if greeting a long lost friend.

Tom sat and swiveled to face him and said, "It's really great to have you back on duty, Chakotay. Now maybe you can keep the Captain in line," he added with an impish, cocky grin.

"Have you been out-of-line Captain?" asked Chakotay with mock disapproval.

"Only for about two months, Commander. But I'm sure that will change now." Looking at Tom she said, "Eyes front Mr. Paris and take our speed up to Warp 3."

Tom nodded at Chakotay and gave one last whispered aside before turning to implement the order. "See what I mean. She's already getting bossy."

Chakotay leaned back and sighed deeply. It felt good to be back on duty!

~ ~ ~ ~

It wasn't long before Chakotay returned to duty full time and assumed all his normal duties. He led away teams, some of them dangerous, prowled the ship helping with problems, and met every demand and order given by the Captain. His physical stamina kept improving until at last the doctor pronounced him 100% and released him from reporting to Sick Bay every day.

On several missions Chakotay faced danger, being injured one time and saving an Ensign's life through quick thinking and acting, on another mission, while putting his own life in peril. This bothered Kathryn, but she knew it was all in the line of duty and it is what Chakotay would normally have done, so she gritted her teeth and kept her personal feelings locked up. He put in extra hours helping B'Elanna solve a problem in Engineering and in one battle when Tom was knocked unconscious, took over Helm and using some of his old Maquis tactics, managed to get Voyager out of a battle with an alien ship with little damage.

However, on one away mission, the team came under intense hostile fire. Harry called to Voyager that everyone was at the beam out site except Chakotay and Ensign Cotton.

"Where is the Commander?" asked Janeway, trying to appear calm, yet being concerned.

"He went back for Ensign Cotton and told us to get to the beam out site and back to the ship, but he still hasn't reported and I can't raise him on my Comm Badge."

"All right Harry. We'll beam you all back and then attempt to locate the Commander and see if we can beam he and the Ensign out."

Tuvok initiated a search and finally located Chakotay and the Ensign, but they were in such a position transport was not possible.

"Let him know we have a lock on him but he has to move, Tuvok," ordered Kathryn.

Two hours later, with an open Comm line indicating almost constant phaser fire, Chakotay reported he was going to have to 'chance it' to get into an open area as the aliens were advancing.

Kathryn nervously paced and then heard Chakotay call "Voyager. We are moving out now!"

Running and hard breathing could be heard as Janeway anxiously listened and watched Tuvok. A grunt was heard and a woman's voice saying, "Commander. Are you all right?"

Instantly Kathryn knew Chakotay had been shot but at that moment Tuvok said, "I have them Captain."

"Beam them to Sick Bay. Chakotay has obviously been injured," said the Captain, who then took her seat and ordered Tom to break orbit and move away from the planet." This had been a very worrisome moment for Kathryn, but it was duty time and she couldn't show undue concern for Chakotay. Besides her shift was almost over and she would go to sickbay to check in a few moments, as she would for any other crewmember.

As her shift neared completion, she left Tuvok in charge and headed for Sick Bay. Kathryn walked in to see Chakotay lying on the bio-bed with the doctor working on his lower right chest. He looked up at her entrance and smiled.

"The Commander will be all right, Captain. However, another three inches up and I might not be saying that. He would be doing his usual 'fight for life'," he grumped.

Kathryn smiled at Chakotay and said, "Must you always tempt fate, Commander?"

He laughed. "I try not to Captain, but Ensign Cotton was in danger so I merely went back for her." He smiled and added, "As a good First Officer."

Kathryn grinned, patted him on the shoulder and replied, "Good job, Commander. Now I have to go see B'Elanna in Engineering for a moment. Your shift is almost over so I'll see you later in our quarters," and she walked out of Sick Bay.

This action and demeanor was merely an indication of how both Kathryn and Chakotay were totally professional when on duty, and were very proud of the fact they hadn't had any but the normal Captain-First Officer disagreements. The crew didn't notice any difference in their handling of ship's matters even though they were now married. Privately, however, they showed their love to each other constantly and gradually Chakotay's 'physical problem' was healing, whether through time or the doctor's treatment of that area, and he was finally able to make love to Kathryn, a moment that gave them both immense physical as well as mental pleasure.

A year after their marriage Harry suddenly leaned forward and stared intently at his panel. Finally he looked up and quietly said, "Commander, can you look at this a moment?"

Chakotay moved up to his station and stared at the readings, looked at Tuvok and asked what his readings showed. Tuvok nodded his head after a moment and said his readings showed the same. Chakotay tapped his badge.

"Captain to the Bridge."

As she came striding out from her Ready Room she noticed the gathering at Harry's station and headed there.

"What is it?"

"You better look for yourself, Captain," said Chakotay.

She looked at the readout, bent forward and read it again. Looking up she raised an eyebrow.

"A wormhole?"

"We think so, Captain," replied Harry. "When we are closer, I'd like to request sending out a sensor-probe to examine it and see where it goes, whether it is stable and how large."

"Agreed. Send the coordinates to Tom, and send the information down to Astrometrics. Chakotay you're with me," and both walked quickly off the Bridge.

By the time they arrived, Seven was already busy checking it out. Shortly Voyager arrived at the wormhole and Harry sent the probe through. Data was soon feeding back to Astrometrics and Kathryn and Chakotay watched the screen as the information gradually took shape and meaning.

Suddenly a star-filled sky was seen. Janeway tapped her badge. "Where did it come out Harry? Can you give a 360 degree view?"

"In a minute Captain," came Harry's voice. "Okay, it's coming in now."

Everyone stood and stared not knowing what to expect as the scene kept changing. Then suddenly a planet loomed in the distance.

"Zoom in on that, Harry."

As the scene enlarged Kathryn gasped. It was Earth!

"Harry," she said quietly. "What do your sensors show?"

"It's Earth, Captain," said Harry in an awe-struck voice.

"I mean where does the probe show it is?"

"In the Alpha Quadrant, Captain." Said Harry now in an excited voice.

"Are you positive? This isn't an alternate universe or some alien playing with our minds?"

"Everything reads like I said, Captain."

Chakotay, standing beside Kathryn, said softly, "It seems too good to be true, that we would find a wormhole that close to Earth."

"Exactly my thoughts, Commander," she said as she turned. "Let's head up to the Bridge. Meanwhile, Seven, continue to study that information," and she and the Commander walked quickly out of Astrometrics.

As they walked onto the Bridge, the screen showed the planet Earth and everyone was staring at it, some with big smiles on their faces.

Janeway walked to Tuvok's station instead of Harry's, as she felt he would be unemotional and add some concise answers.

"Tuvok, what do you think?"

"It does appear to be the Alpha Quadrant and Earth, Captain. However, as we have been fooled before by aliens, I suggest we proceed with caution."

"Agreed, Tuvok. Are there any ways we can double check, to make sure this is exactly what we are seeing and not some AU or mind-play by an alien we are not aware of?"

Chakotay spoke up. "Captain, aren't we due to hear from Starfleet tomorrow? Possibly there is some way Lt Barkley can affirm this information or you can ask a nondescript question that would give us a clue."

"Good idea Commander," she said with a big smile. "Continue to study this data. In the meantime we will just sit here until we hear from Starfleet in the morning."

"How about taking the Flyer through, Captain?" asked Tom.

"How large is this wormhole, Harry and how stable?"

"It is almost twice the size of Voyager and all readings indicate it is stable throughout, Captain," said Harry, his voice still excited.

Kathryn stood a moment and then shook her head at Tom. "We will wait Tom," and then she and Chakotay moved to their seats and looked up at that big blue planet, which they so desperately wished to reach, but only if it really was their Earth.

The following morning most of the Senior Officers on the Bridge were nervous as they waited for word on the relay from Lt Barkley. The Captain and Commander were already down in Astrometrics awaiting the first communiqué.

At last Seven nodded and said telemetry was coming in and Kathryn took a deep breath and squared her shoulders.

The picture was scattered and broken at first, but soon the visage of Lt Barkley appeared.

"Captain Janeway! Oh, it is so nice to see you again. I have good news, Captain. We have many messages to send you from family and friends!"

"That is good news Lt. Barkley. But if I may ask a question?"

"Surely Captain," he replied.

"I realize you are contacting us through the relay, but are you able to tell exactly where we are when you contact us?"

"Uhm, no, not exactly Captain. We have an approximation as to coordinates and area, that is all."

"And just where do you pinpoint us now, Lt? Can you tell me that?"

"Uhm, yes, yes I can. Let me see," he said as he looked down and his fingers could be seen tapping at some panel. "Okay, yes, it seems you are in the area we call #22, Captain. Is that important to you?"

"In a way Lt. We are curious how far we are from Earth is all. Does Starfleet know or are they aware of any Wormholes near Earth?"

"Not that I'm aware of Captain, and believe me I would know! I keep searching for them so I can possibly give you some coordinates for a way home. Two days ago I was given a report that there was some fluctuation about three or four days from Earth, but I have been on assignment for Admiral Paris and been unable to investigate it."

"Do you know the coordinates of that fluctuation? Possible we are near it and can check on it on our way by," asked Janeway as she smiled at Chakotay.

"Uhm, well, yes, but I'm not sure where I put that information. Tell you what, uhm Captain. I will start the telemetry of all the messages, including those from Starfleet and will run to my so-called desk to see if I can find it. Hold on and don't go away. Oh, ha ha, I guess you wont go away will you? Telemetry is starting. Back in a moment," and he could be seen scurrying across the background.

Kathryn put her hands on her hips and looked over at Seven, whom was busy downloading the information now coming through the micro-wormhole.

"What do you think Commander?" she asked.

"If he can find the coordinates, I'm quite sure Harry or Seven can pinpoint that on the map in conjunction with our position. It actually sounds promising, if that fluctuation is where we are now. It could be a brand new wormhole that has formed."

"My thought, too. Oh, I see the Lt coming across the room now."

"Good news Captain," said Barkley as he rushed up. "I actually found it on the first attempt. Let's see, the report lists the coordinates as . . . where does it say that? Hmm. Oh yes, here it is!"

"Lt. Could you pass that on through right now? The time is drawing short and I don't want to lose that information."

"All right, Captain. Let's see I will pause the data stream here, insert the coordinates, and then resume the messages." He looked up with a big smile. "It's done Captain. You should receive that information shortly. Oh this is exciting. You checking in the Delta Quadrant and I will check it from the Alpha Quadrant!" Then he frowned. "However, I fail to see that the fluctuation would extend all the way to the Delta Quadrant, unless . . . no, there hasn't been a wormhole in that area, ever. Sorry to raise your hopes, Captain. That is if I did," he stammered.

Janeway smiled. "No problem, Lt. We don't get too excited anymore about anything until we know it for a fact. You are breaking up now Lt so that means our . . ." and the picture faded from view. Janeway immediately turned to Seven.

"Have you received the coordinates?"

"There is a pause in the data stream, Captain. I assume it is the next item to come through," she said in her usual dry unemotional voice. "Yes, it is coming in now."

"Good. Put it up on the screen and coordinate it with the Alpha Quadrant and our position."

Seven worked her console for several minutes. Kathryn and Chakotay stared intently at the screen as information and picture went through several changes. At last the picture was stable. Seven didn't need to say a word.

The coordinates of the fluctuation in the Alpha Quadrant went on a direct line to where Voyager sat at the moment!

Kathryn turned and looked at Chakotay and both broke out in large smiles. "This just might be our ticket home, Chakotay," she said as moisture formed in the corner of her eyes.

Chakotay nodded, but turned to Seven. "Can you verify the data stream's transmission point?"

Seven again worked her panel and then looked up and in a self-satisfied and smug expression said, "It has originated from Earth and all information matches previous transmissions, Commander."

Without another word both the Captain and Commander walked for the doors, with the Captain at the last minute looking over her shoulder and saying, "Thank you Seven!"

Back on the Bridge, Janeway had Harry send another probe through, this time with a message directed to the planet and specifically Lt Barkley. It said, "Lt Barkley. We have found the fluctuation on this side of the Delta Quadrant at precisely the coordinates you gave us two days ago. We believe it is a wormhole. Respond please."

Harry looked at her. "Captain it wasn't two days ago. It was just a few moments ago. And you didn't sign your name."

"I know Harry, I know," she said with a secretive smile at Chakotay and then both walked to their seats, where they sat nervously waiting, and yet knowing it might take a while.

Within one hour Harry reported a message coming through the probe.

"Let's have it Harry," said Janeway as she hurried to his station.

"It reads. 'I gave coordinates to a specific Captain not two days ago but less than two hours ago. Who is this?' "

Kathryn broke into a large smile. "Tell him – tell him . . . this is Captain Janeway and we are coming home!"

An hour later Voyager was ready and approaching the wormhole. Readings still indicated it was stable.

"Let's do it Tom," she said quietly. Hold it steady at 1/4 Thrusters. We don't want to make it unstable and be crushed."

As Voyager entered the wormhole the Bridge became quiet. At first the ride was very smooth, but shortly the ship started to experience turbulence, which wasn't bad at first but was now increasing.

"How much further, Harry?" she asked as she held onto the arms of her chair.

"We are one-half of the way through Captain, but the probe indicates the hole is starting to close. We must be disrupting it!" he yelled.

"Steady Tom," she said as she could sense he wanted to punch in full Thrusters or even Warp.

The ride got rougher and rougher and people were beginning to be thrown to the deck.

"We are almost there, Captain," shouted Harry. "Another 500 meters!"

Kathryn turned and looked at Chakotay, and found him looking at her. Would they make it? After all they had been through, was this wormhole going to close and crush them now? Would she not be able to spend the rest of her life with her beloved husband, Chakotay? He smiled and she felt comfort in that. Suddenly there was one violet thump of Voyager and then everything was quiet and still and there was stars all around them!

"We are out," said Tom with a big sigh of relief.

"Position, Harry?" asked Janeway as she stood and looked back at him.

He was working his panel and suddenly looked up with a big smile. "We are in the Alpha Quadrant, Captain. Four days from Earth!"

Janeway expelled a big breath and only then realized she had been holding it.

Chakotay moved up beside her and said in his soft voice, "You did it Captain. You got us home."

She turned to him and with a big smile responded, "We did it Commander. We did it!"

"Captain," said Tuvok. "We are being hailed by a ship that is on course for our position at high warp. It is the Starship . . . Enterprise!" he said in a startled tone as he looked down at her.

"On screen Tuvok," and she and Chakotay turned and faced forward.

"A moment later Captain Picard's face appeared and as he saw Captain Janeway, he smiled and said, "Welcome home Captain Janeway. I see you made it. Our sensors indicated the fluctuation was closing, and per our message from Admiral Paris were sent to either escort you to Earth or look for debris. I'm certainly glad it is the former."

"As are we Captain Picard. It's certainly good to see you again Jean Luc," she added, her voice betraying the emotion she was now feeling.

"Has your ship sustained damage Captain? Will you be able to make it or will you need assistance?"

Kathryn looked back at Tuvok and he merely said, "Damage is minimal, Captain and repair crews are already on it."

Turning back she smiled at Picard. "We have experienced far worse, Captain. I say proudly that Voyager will sail to Earth under her own power."

"Then I say again, welcome home Voyager, Captain Janeway and all your crew. It will be an honor to escort you to Earth. Picard out."

That night as Kathryn and Chakotay lay in bed, their arms wrapped around one another, Chakotay suddenly cleared his throat and said, "You know, Kathryn, that once we are back at Earth and all the 'welcome' ends, we are just liable to be court-martialed for getting married don't you?"

Kathryn sighed and turned so she could put her head on his shoulder. "I guess that's quite possible, but it will be worth it. I assure you I won't let them talk me into divorcing you!" she said with a sly grin.

He chuckled and tightened his arms around her. "And I wont let you. You are my wife, my soulmate, and I have waited too long to have you. I'm afraid you are stuck with me for life."

"Exactly how I want it my darling," she murmured and soon both were asleep.

~ ~ ~ ~

As could be expected the next four days were almost an organized chaos on Voyager, and Captain Janeway had a hard time maintaining strict protocol decorum herself. She and Chakotay beamed over to Enterprise the first evening and had a wonderful dinner and tour of the ship. The Enterprise crew greeted them like heroes, with large smiles and words of congratulations.

Many messages streamed back and forth between Starfleet and Voyager, until at last, the battered, but proud ship circled Earth and headed past Earth station for her appointed docking port.

As they slowly flew past, they were aware all windows in Earth Station were filled to capacity with people staring out at them, some waving furiously, others smiling broadly and still others just staring in awe, not only at the condition of the ship but the fact Voyager was home.

After the docking clamps had locked on, a loud and long cheer erupted from the Voyager crew. They were home! It had taken over seven years and many hardships, but they were home!

Four Admirals were beamed onto the Bridge and welcomed Captain Janeway and her crew home. They informed her that before the formalities of debriefing the entire crew would be treated to parades, honors, celebrations and dinners.

And that's what it was. For four days, the entire crew was shuttled from place to place and honored with medals, dinners and speeches. Private family gatherings were arranged, everyone was badgered and hounded by the news media and it seemed to Kathryn the spotlight would never turn off.

At last things quieted down and the long grueling process of debriefing of the crew commenced. Meanwhile Starfleet engineers pored over Voyager and her systems: computer records began to be downloaded to be studied by all departments, and the Astrometrics blueprints were studied intently as well, with the obvious intention of including that in other Starfleet ships. The jury-rigging and patching B'Elanna and her crew had made in Engineering, along with some of the inventive adjustments, were marveled at.

During all this Kathryn and Chakotay managed to find a nice small home on the outskirts and somehow, with family and friends help, managed to decorate and furnish it.

At last, after a long three weeks of debriefing meetings, sometimes lasting well into the night, Starfleet declared the debriefings ended and granted each crewmember three months leave.

The first thing Kathryn and Chakotay did was to spend a few days at her mother's place, where Gretchen, old beyond her years and feeble now from the constant sever year worry, but so happy to have her daughter back on Earth, entertained as well as admitted to Kathryn that she had made the 'catch of the century' in Chakotay.

Finally back in their home, they rested for a few days and then decided they would have the Senior Officers over for dinner, to celebrate privately their good fortune in returning to Earth.

Rather than risk destroying the dinner, and much to Chakotay's delight, Kathryn had everything catered and the night was very festive, with everyone enjoying themselves immensely. Tom, B'Elanna and Harry were entertaining with their usual banter and joking, with the doctor having to almost be shut off at times, as he got so carried away with how Starfleet was studying him. Meanwhile Tuvok sat quietly, seemingly bored with the frivolity.

"How is T'Pel Tuvok?" asked Kathryn.

"She is well Captain. I will finally be finished with everything tomorrow and shall leave on the first transport for Vulcan. I must tell you Captain, that I have decided to resign from Starfleet."

"I somehow thought you might, Tuvok. I wish you well my friend."

Just then the doorbell rang and after excusing herself Kathryn went to the door and opened it. Two Starfleet Officers stood on the porch. She could see a Starfleet Security vessel at the curb and two guards standing just outside.

"Lt, is there something wrong?" she asked.

Chakotay had now moved up beside Kathryn and looked intently at the young Lt., who appeared quite nervous.

"Captain Janeway? Commander Chakotay?"

Both nodded as Chakotay slipped his arm around Kathryn's waist.

The Lt. reached inside his tunic and pulling out two pieces of paper, handed each one.

"I regret to inform you that those are warrants for your arrest and I am ordered to bring you back to Starfleet immediately."

Both Kathryn and Chakotay stared at the Lt, eyes wide in shock.

"What are the charges, Lt.?" asked Chakotay."

"I'm sorry sir, but I'm not privileged to know that information. Can you please come quietly?"

Kathryn looked at Chakotay and then said, "Lt. we have guests celebrating our return to Earth. If I give you my word as a Starfleet Officer that we will come directly into Starfleet Headquarters when they leave . . ."

"I'm sorry Captain, I have my orders," said the flustered Lt.

"Lt." said Chakotay softly. "Let's compromise then. I assure you we will not run away. Just go back to your vessel and wait. When you see our guests leave we will join you shortly."

The Lt. hesitated and then shook his head. "Sirs, I don't rightly know why this is happening and at the moment, without knowing the charges, I really don't agree with this action, but I have my orders."

Just then Tom walked into the front room. "Is there something wrong, Captain?"

Kathryn turned to him. "Apparently there is, Tom. Chakotay and I are being arrested. Will you excuse everyone for us and lock up on your way out?"

Tom stood there, confusion and shock flooding across his face, as Kathryn turned to Chakotay.

"Get our coats, sweetheart. It seem as if we still have another battle to face."
